Spring is the perfect time for family photo sessions, with the warm weather and vibrant colors creating a beautiful backdrop. However, coordinating outfits for a family photo session can be a stressful task, especially when trying to balance different personal styles and color preferences.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start, so here are some tips and tricks for coordinating your family's outfits, so you can focus on making memories and enjoying the photo session, instead of worrying about what to wear!

1. Coordinate colors:

One way to ensure a cohesive look in your family photos is to coordinate colors. Choose a color palette that complements your family’s style and the session location. Soft pastels, neutral colors and earth tones are popular choices for spring family photos and help to create a natural look and doesn’t overpower. Try to avoid really bright colors. Bright colors like red and magenta can reflect back onto your skin.

2. Don’t be afraid of subtle patterns:

While coordinating is important, you don't want everyone to be dressed in the same solid color. Mix and match colors and subtle patterns, such as stripes or florals, to add visual interest to the outfits. Just make sure the patterns aren’t too loud and that more family members are in solid colors than in pattern.

3. Be comfortable:

It is so important to feel good. Comfort and confidence show through in photos. And when it comes to kids, you don’t want to have to constantly adjust an outfit. If you are buying new clothes, make sure to try on the outfits before the session. This also goes for the shoes you wear. You want to enjoy your session and explore a bit, so make sure everyone can walk in their footwear.

4. Have fun with the details:

The right accessories or layered piece can take your family's outfits from basic to beautiful. Consider adding a pop of color with hats, a cardigan, a headband or some subtle jewelry. Accessories also help tie the outfits together and add dimension to the photo. Just be mindful not to over-accessorize, as it can become distracting. With kids, try not to force accessories. If your child doesn’t want to wear the bow you were hoping to add to their hair, bring it along. But if they still don’t want to wear it during the session, it’s best to go without.
